Time
If you are like me then you probably have more than one WIP. Right now I am drowning in WIPs with some so close to being complete that I want to give them most of my attention. My sample for the upcoming Honeydrip Hexagon Pattern is about one evening sewing session from being finished. The binding is over halfway attached with big stitches, and I cannot wait to show it off 100% finished. Jessica’s free sewalong quilt came in two different sizes and block designs this year. I did the “traditional” version and am a little over half way hand quilting it. I ended up loving the “modern” version of the quilt too, so of course, I started making that one as well and I have a few rows completed. I also have three other EPP quilts in the block making stage.
Obviously working in the BOM was going to be a bit of a challenge but I have to make this one. So now I’ve switched out my “on the go” sewing project with the BOM block 1. I usually only have about 15 minutes a day to work on it during the car pick up line at my daughter’s school. In three 10-15 minute sewing sessions I have already almost completed both subunits, and can start attaching them to the main piece soon. With school being out for Thanksgiving break next week I will have to try and sneak some time in.
If you are busy, and questioning if you have time for a BOM, I’m here to tell you that with my limited sewing time I suspect I will be able to finish both blocks just by sitting in the car line and maybe a few minutes here and there. Block 1 should take me about 8-10 days of my mini sewing sessions. I would already be sitting in the car waiting so it makes sense to use my time for something I enjoy, it also helps that I have horrible reception by the school which helps stop me from scrolling. We generally have little bouts of minutes when we have to wait, so why not use them? Those minutes add up and help quiet the mind and help us be in the moment in our crazy busy lives.
I also realize that planning fabric and basting shapes adds to this time, but I generally tackle this task in the evening when my daughters are playing after dinner. It took me 3 nights after dinner, which was generally 10-15 minutes as well to get the fabric cut & basted. Block 2 took me about 45 minutes to and hour of dedicated time to cut and baste.
How will you make your BOM blocks?
