Pop Rocks Fast vs. Slow

I’m almost finished with my Pop Rocks sample quilt, I just have a few more edge pieces to sew on and while I will still be active on the Facebook group I won’t be posting much on the blog about the quilt. I have several more samples to work on and I have taken on another designer to sell kits for :)

So I wanted to give a few updates on my sewing adventure with Pop Rocks before shifting gears on the blog to show you new projects and musings.

Pop Rocks:

I have enjoyed sewing this quilt so much! I really enjoy Jessica Bree’s patterns like this one that has different blocks and shapes. While I enjoy repeating blocks too, doing a different block for a whole quilt is just so fun and keeps me creative through out the process. I started calling some blocks “fast blocks” and others “slow blocks” based on how quickly or slowly I could stitch them up. Sewing is a daily practice for me. Every evening I sit down to relax for the evening either with an audiobook or podcast and sew for about an hour or two. Some of these blocks I could finish in one sitting which I called “fast blocks” and other might take me 2 sittings hence the moniker “slow blocks.”

Fast blocks: 1, 3, 5, 8, 9, 13, 15, 16, 17, 18, and all the half blocks.

I should note that this is obviously subjective as maybe some evening I was just more tired than other nights and blocks might work up faster for you. Overall in my sewing journey over the year I have noticed I get more sewing done with larger shapes vs. smaller shapes.

I did time myself on how quickly I could sew the completed blocks together, and depending on the night I could sew 3 8inch seams in about 15-20ish minutes. Again this was an average and if I needed to change thread color my time would be longer. I generally do a locking stitch where seams meet within the edge, or at the very least at the halfway point.

I’m showing off Block 13 here as I thought it was fitting for Friday the 13th :P

Happy Sewing and subscribe to the blog to stay up to date on new projects and musings :)
