Half Block 1 & Block 5
With Pop Rocks EPP Quilt BOM about to kick off I thought I’d check in and add some more blocks to the blog!
I’ve been exclusively working on Pop Rocks so that I can have a full sample for everyone to see, and double check that my construction methods make the most sense. So far I have Blocks 1-5, 9, and Half Block 1 completed as well as the subunits for the top of the quilt. I am working out of order as I need to get this finished up quickly and my construction methods will slightly differ from someone doing a true BOM.
I will note for everyone doing the normal BOM, I personally would not start attaching blocks together without a plan. The blocks are very large, and while most of the blocks are sent in order, other than the Half Blocks, the edges are not sent until the last two months.
If you would Like to start attaching Blocks I would sew two blocks together max. You could sew Blocks 1 & 2 together, and then Blocks 3 & 4, month 3 is slightly out of order with Blocks 5 & 6 and skipping Half Block 1 until month 4. If you choose to start sewing blocks together early I would highly recommend not sewing straight down the sides. To keep my blocks from shifting I sew from the center out.
I posted an almost completed coloring sheet for my quilt on the FB group, and I can confidently say that a 27 count half yard bundle should work for this quilt, unless you are fussy cutting or have directional fabric. I honestly believe that a 24 count half yard bundle could work for this quilt as well. If you are using a FQ bundle you will need extra coordinating fabrics.
Make sure you tag me (@waywardthreads.co) and Jessica (@jessicabree) on Instagram with all things Pop Rocks BOM! We love seeing everyone’s layouts and fabric selections! Also share in the FB group too to keep everyone motivated and inspired.
